29 June Interclub 25
The interclub 25 mile time trial was promoted this year by Witham Wheelers on the Silk Willoughby-Osbournby-Donnington course. The event is competed for every year in memory of local cyclist Jack O'Connor between 4 local clubs; VC Lincoln, Newark Castle, Sleaford Whs and Witham Whs with the fastest 4 riders to count.
Jim Coleman was the fastest on the night by almost 5 minutes but unfortunately is not eligible for the team competition, as he is only 2nd claim for Witham. Despite an excellent turnout of club riders and good rides from Peter Cocker in his first proper 25 mile time trial, Bill Harrison with a personal best, Neil Dowsett also in his first 25 mile TT and Rob Johnson now getting back to fitness, a lack of strength in depth meant that we have not won the trophy since 1964.
Sleaford Whs won the trophy by 3 minutes from VC Lincoln with Newark another 3 minutes further back and Witham Whs bringing up the rear. Next year it will be the 50th anniversary of the running of the event and it would be good to see a concerted effort to bring about a more respectable finish from the Wobblies.

The heavy rain in the afternoon coupled with half term holidays and a change of course seemed to deter some of the usual regular competitors in the weekly Time Trial.
However 13 riders enjoyed excellent conditions on a warm calm evening taking in one lap of the club Road Race circuit from Hungerton to Skillington, a rolling 12 mile route on quiet roads.
Mick Ryan again proved strongest with a clear win by over a minute from guest Dave Reeves (Sleaford Wheelers) with Dave Ostler in his first ride of the year, just beating Peter Cocker by 2 seconds for third place.

National 10 Mile Time Trial Champs, Warwickshire
Jim Coleman rode the RTTC national 10 after not feeling great all the week leading up to race. The very hot conditions on the day resulted in dehydration and a time some 1min 30 seconds slower than what he expected to finish in 21.47. Winner on the day was Michael Hutchinson again in the very rapid time of 18.37.

22/5 Sheffrec CC 10 at Hatfield Woodhouse, near Doncaster.
Only one Witham Wheeler, Bill Harrison, entered this event . The weather was hot and sunny with only light winds and a time of 24:12 was a PB for this course which is normally badly affected by being very open with no hedges. The winner, Julian Ramsbottom, recorded a time of 20:53 |
15/5 Melton Olympic Cycling Club 10 mile Time Trial
Four members of Witham Wheelers entered this event which was to have taken place on the A46 near Six Hills but because of road works had to be re-scheduled to the A10/17 course which is a triangular course near to Griffydam. The course is used by Coalville Wheelers for their evening 10’s and is on minor roads not dissimilar to our road race circuit.
Unfortunately, Kim Paxton had to work in the cycle shop and was unable to attend and the remaining 3 riders, Martin Hedley, Mike Lewis and Bill Harrison had mixed fortunes on this hilly course with Mike puncturing near the half way point but still managing to post a time of 37:55 with Martin Hedley at 27:25 and Bill Harrison 27:09. The winner, James Perkins, managed a 22:03! |
15/5/10 Yorkshire Cycling Federation open 10m TT
Jim Coleman was looking forward to riding the superfast v718 course on sat afternoon but road works on the course meant that the much slower v714 was used instead.
There was a top class field entered and in the result there was not much time separating the top twenty riders.
Jim managed to get third place with 21.23 just 2 seconds behind Joel wainman, and a further 7 seconds behind winner Ian cooke. It would have been nice to have got the win but he was happy to get in the money and beat race favorite Adam Duggleby into 4th place. |

Time Trialling
Otherwise known as the ‘Race of Truth’ as it pits riders against the clock. There is nowhere to hide!
-
In the UK Time Trials are generally held over set distances of 10, 25, 30, 50, 100 miles and 12 and 24 hours.
-
Witham Wheelers runs a series of club Time Trials from April though to August with HQ at the Cricket Club on Gorse Lane, see 2010 event list
-
These are open to all riders from 12 years old to ‘can you still ride a bike safely’.
-
Riders should be either full club members or 2nd claim members. Guests are accepted on the evening to cater for riders who are new to the sport or are visiting from another area, however this is limited to 3 guest appearances, after which you should join the club.
-
Sign on at the HQ at least 15 minutes before the start time, (see event list) this enables the time keeper to sort the starting order out. You will be allocated a race number which equals the number of minutes you start after the race starts.
- Entry fees are (Link to club costs)
-
Time Trials are supposed to be an individual effort and although you can chase another rider you must not take direct pace. In an open Time Trial you could be disqualified, as in Triathlons for ‘draughting’.
-
Through the season the club runs a 10 mile handicap league to try and give everyone a chance of winning. This is held over12 events with your best 8 scoring events to count. Your handicap is calculated from you current best time on the Gorse lane course, with points awarded to the top 10 riders on handicap on the night.
-
The club also runs some other circuit time trials and 25 mile events to give some variety from the 10 mile events. For the 10 mile course there will always be a marshal at the turn who you should go around, and on the circuit events there will be marshals’ to show you the correct course. (Link to routes)
-
A full list of the club trophies that can be won and presented at the annual dinner is as follows (Link)
-
If you want to try the wider world of time trialing then most cycling clubs organize weekly club events and would welcome guests.
-
There is also a wide range of ‘Open’ time trials which are promoted by clubs throughout the UK and need to be pre-entered (usually 2 weeks in advance). As a member of Witham Wheelers you are eligible to enter these, details can be found from the Cycling Time Trials web site. This is the standard entry form you would use (Link).
-
Witham Wheelers is also affiliated to the Lincs Road Racing association, (LRRA) which promotes the County Time Trial Championships, you can find out more at their website.
