2011 Club 10 Mile handicap league
Its been a record breaking season in more ways than one, with more riders taking part than ever before, times generally getting quicker and the first sub 21 minute time, albeit in a 2-up. A total of 103 riders rode at least one event this year, with many new riders coming back regularly througout the season.
You can download two lists: the final calculation of the points for the handicap league, taking into account who is a paid up first claim member and also a list of the fastest rides during the season by each rider.
If anyone wants any more stat's let me know and they can be generated in due course.

16/7 Lincoln Wheelers Charity 10 mile TT (British Heart Foundation) (C10/28)

Martin Hedley 24:59
Dave Herd 26:35

18/6 Melton Olympic CC 25 mile TT
It was a blustery showery day out on the A1 based A25/4 course for Melton Olympic’s 25 mile TT covering Long Bennington to Carlton on Trent. Despite gusting conditions it made little difference to either the out or in legs in what proved a fast evening. The four Wheelers taking part all set PBs for the year with the ever-green Dave Strickson heading Martin Hedley at 58.29 to 1:00:28, then Ian Simpson at 1:05:54 and Mike Lewis having a champagne ride at 1:05:56.

12/6 Lindsey Road 25 mile TT
Back in Lincolnshire following the ride last week down in Devon for the National 25, Chris Carter rode
the A180 dual carriagway course from Greal Coates to Barnetby Interchange. A time of 58.26 was a two minute improvement on last years time in the same event and was good enough for 13th overall. Winner was Anthony Nash in 53.38 mins riding for Scunthorpe Poly.

11/6 Fusion CC 10 miler, (O10/1) Hatfield Woodhouse
Three club riders travelled to Hatfield Woodhouse for what the forecast promised to be ideal conditions. Wrong! On the day 20 mph gusts mimicked Gorse lane conditions, but at least it was flat albeit with an awkward roundabout at the turn. Chris Crawford turned in a 25:54, next up Ian Simpson, pleased to be just 1:02 behind, with a below par Mike Lewis at 28:24.
Someone called Julian Ramsbottom won the event with a sub 21 minute ride. Top of Page»

5/6 National 25 mile Time Trial Championships
Chris Carter and Jim Coleman ventured to Holdsworthy in Devon this weekend to ride the national 25 on a very hilly single carriageway course. A downpour of rain halfway down the course made the descending at full speed interesting however Chris rode well in his first national event to finish 91st with (1.06.39).
Jim finished 32nd with (58.27) a little disappointed not to improve on his recent national 10 result but with being over geared for the course and suffering with a bad back he was pleased with his final placing.
Winner was Michael Hutchinson in 53.36 the slowest winning time since 1987 which showed the severity of the course.

4/6 - Newark Castle 25m TT
In tough conditions on a very windy A1 there will still some good times by the club riders taking part.
Martin Hedley 64:01
Dave Herd 67:15
Ian Simpson 71:15
Lara Thornhill 69:11
Kim Paxton 65:42
Neil Sentance 61:57
Mike Lewis 70:35
Fastest on the day was Matt Sinclair (Lutterworth) 52:34.

29/5 Nottingham Clarion 50 mile TT
An excellent ride by Chris Carter on 2 laps of a circuit taking in Bottesford, Bingham, Harby, 2 laps. Difficult cross winds on the Bottesford, Bingham to Harby stretch were the toughest section with a chance to recover on the Harby to Bottesford Long Lane.
Chris finished just outside the 2 hour barrier by 32 seconds which was good enough for 10th overall and a 13 minute improvement on his previous best time. A good ride also by new club member Dean Toon in 2hrs 15min 19secs. Winner was Matt Sinclair in 48min 39secs.

29/5 Doncaster Wheelers CC 25m
Jim Coleman rode the Doncaster Whs 25 on a flat yet exposed single carriageway course and with another very windy weekend the conditions were tough. Riding as the scratch rider Jim was able to time check himself against the in form Julian Ramsbottom and was pleased to be about 30 seconds up at halfway which he held to the end.
He was pleased to have beaten Ramsbottom only to discover that there was a (ringer) hidden in the field - a professional rider from (Twenty3c-orbea rt) a Swedish lad Gunnar Gronlund who did a storming ride to win by 30 seconds. The old course record was broken by the top 3 riders.
1st Gunnar Gronlund (Twenty3c-Orbea rt) 54.55
2nd Jim Coleman (Witham wheelers) 55.27
3rd Julian Ramsbottom (team i ride uk) 55.55

Bill Harrison 24:16

21/5 City Road Club (Hull) 10 mile TT
Three Wheelers used their passports to get into South Yorkshire to ride the City Road Club (Hull) 10 mile TT using the V719 course.
Breezy conditions made them feel at home with Chris Crawford recording a season best of 24:28, followed by Vets Ian Simpson (25:47) and Mike Lewis (26:09).
D Furness of Doncaster Wheelers took first spot in 21:25.

Sunday 22/5 LRRA 10 mile championships.
Four wheelers rode Sunday morning on the very windy 10 mile course between Skegness and Louth. Neil Sentence rode strongly to record 23.23 also riding was Martin Hedley who did well to dip under 25 mins with 24.53 and Kim Paxton putting in a swift ride to finish with 26.10.
Despite tired legs from the night before Jim managed to take the win with 20.38 with 2nd place going to Ian Dalton (Cherry Valley rt) 20.50 and Tony Nash (Scunthorpe poly) 3rd with 20.55.

Saturday 21/5 National 10 mile Championships
Jim Coleman kicked off a busy weekend with the national 10 mile champs on Saturday evening on an out and back course in north Yorkshire on the A19. With very high winds the conditions were tough, the first 5 miles were into a block headwind and after the turn a tail wind home, making for some relatively slow times.

Multi-Olympic champion Bradley Wiggins (Sky Pro cycling), taking a break from the world of professional racing, took the win with 19.14 and 2nd was Michael Hutchinson (In Gear train sharp rt) in 19.55 and 3rd place went to Joseph Perrett (Twenty 3c orbea) with 20.26.

Jim managed to place 22nd and was very pleased to have improved on last years position of 97th. However looking at the results and seeing just how close it was and finding himself the wrong side of a large group of identical times. A 3 second improvement would have gained a top 15 position and just a 14 second faster ride would have been good enough for a top 10 finish, every second counts.

3/4 Skegness Hilly 25
Chris Carter and Jim Coleman took part in the Skegness hilly on Sunday morning on a very tough course taking in some of the Lincolnshire wolds from Gunby (near Skegness) to Louth and back. Knowing that the course record of 56.07 was held by scratch rider Joel Wainman (team swift), Jim to his surprise with a few miles to go found the record in striking distance but unfortunately finished 9 seconds outside it with (56.16). Joel Wainman would have to go very close or break his own course record to take the win and with an excellent ride set a new course record of (55.16) , with Ian Dalton (Cherry Valley RT)taking 3rd place in (57.31). Chris rode strongly to gain a top 20 finish with (1.05.31).

27/3 Spalding Hilly 27 mile Time Trial
A great turnout so early in the season, 9 Wheelers tackled the testing course from Edenham to Grantham and back. Professional rider Steven Lampier (Sigma Sport rt) with top 10 finishes in both Rutland/Melton classic and the UK time trial championships to his credit was the event favourite. Jim Coleman with a strong first quarter matched him for speed early on but as the race progressed Lampier managed to edge ahead and by the end won by 36 seconds from Jim for a well deserved win. 19/3 - Retford and District 10 mile TT
There were four Wheelers riding the 10m course from Carlton on Trent using the old A1 to Tuxford and back using the fast A1 duel carriageway. Not a bad course and some decent times for an early season 10.
With a headwind outward leg Mike Lewis rode strongly to record (29.40), Martin Hedley received a one minute time penalty for missing his start time and so was given (25.59), Chris Carter, wanting to improve on recent weeks, put in a strong ride to close the gap on some of his rivals with (23.23). With only 9 seconds separating the top 3 riders Jim Coleman managed to gain 3rd place (20.50) again Julian Ramsbottom (team i ride) took the win (20.41) with second place going to Matt Sinclair (Lutterworth cycle centre) (20.45). A familiar name still riding strongly to take 4th place was time trial legend Ian Cammish (Planet x race team). Top of Page»

13/3 - Bourne Wheelers Hilly Time Trial
Seven wheelers tackled the testing hilly two lap course between Stamford and Bourne on a breezy, drizzly morning. Generally times were slower than last year due to the wet conditions and the technical nature of the course however there were great improvements by both Neil Sentance (1.01.26)and Kim Paxton(1.11.11) on their times from last year.
Also improving on last years times were Chris Crawford (1.09.43) and Bill Harrison (1.05.56) with Martin Lister tackling the course for the first time with a very respectable (1.11.06). Chris Carter, still trying to shake off a cold, was slightly down on last year with (1.03.41).
Jim Coleman managed to beat last years time by 2mins (54.01) which was good enough for 3rd position on the day, with in form Julian Ramsbottom, (Team i ride) taking the win (53.24) from course record holder James Perkins (Zenith cc) (53.54), fourth place went to Joel Wainman (team swift rt) (54.16) which made the finishing times of the top 4 pretty close.

Time Trialling
Otherwise known as the ‘Race of Truth’ as it pits riders against the clock. There is nowhere to hide!

  • In the UK Time Trials are generally held over set distances of 10, 25, 30, 50, 100 miles and 12 and 24 hours.

  • Witham Wheelers runs a series of club Time Trials from April though to August with HQ at the Cricket Club on Gorse Lane, see 2010 event list

  • These are open to all riders from 12 years old to ‘can you still ride a bike safely’.

  • Riders should be either full club members or 2nd claim members. Guests are accepted on the evening to cater for riders who are new to the sport or are visiting from another area, however this is limited to 3 guest appearances, after which you should join the club.

  • Sign on at the HQ at least 15 minutes before the start time, (see event list) this enables the time keeper to sort the starting order out. You will be allocated a race number which equals the number of minutes you start after the race starts.

  • Entry fees are (Link to club costs)

  • Time Trials are supposed to be an individual effort and although you can chase another rider you must not take direct pace. In an open Time Trial you could be disqualified, as in Triathlons for ‘draughting’.

  • Through the season the club runs a 10 mile handicap league to try and give everyone a chance of winning. This is held over12 events with your best 8 scoring events to count. Your handicap is calculated from you current best time on the Gorse lane course, with points awarded to the top 10 riders on handicap on the night.

  • The club also runs some other circuit time trials and 25 mile events to give some variety from the 10 mile events. For the 10 mile course there will always be a marshal at the turn who you should go around, and on the circuit events there will be marshals’ to show you the correct course. (Link to routes)

  • A full list of the club trophies that can be won and presented at the annual dinner is as follows (Link)

  • If you want to try the wider world of time trialing then most cycling clubs organize weekly club events and would welcome guests.

  • There is also a wide range of ‘Open’ time trials which are promoted by clubs throughout the UK and need to be pre-entered (usually 2 weeks in advance). As a member of Witham Wheelers you are eligible to enter these, details can be found from the Cycling Time Trials web site. This is the standard entry form you would use (Link).

  • Witham Wheelers is also affiliated to the Lincs Road Racing association, (LRRA) which promotes the County Time Trial Championships, you can find out more at their website.
