The 4th Witham Wheelers reliability ride took place over a rolling 45 mile course out through the picturesque Vale of Belvoir , however the riders taking part saw little of the scenery as heavy rain and strong winds throughout meant thoughts were more on survival. Considering the weather forecast a start list of 26 was a good turnout and all finishers deserved a medal even though no one achieved the target average speeds over the complete route.
The initial part of the route out through Redmile was relatively benign before swinging into the wind and rain towards Colston Basset and then the climb up Long Clawson hill where the block headwind had riders down to under 6mph. Through Scalford and up to Waltham on the Wolds the wind was more behind the riders, who were able to pick up the pace and try to warm up before finishing back at the HQ for a welcome hot drink and cake.
Next Sunday Feb 2nd week its the 5th ride over a 50 mile undulating course via Oasby, Irnham, Castle Bytham and South Witham, with an alternative route of around 30 miles available for those not quite ready for the full route. First group leaves the HQ at the Cricket Club on Gorse lane at 9.00am, all welcome, see web site for full details.
