The first round of 2019 Lincolnshire Cyclo-Cross league took place at Common Plantation near Scunthorpe. With more rain forecast to follow on from heavy overnight rain, tough conditions were expected but the rain held off and the course had drained well to leave only a few boggy patches to catch out the unwary.
Racing followed the usual format with the 30 minute under 16 on first. Amy Kolbert showed the benefit of a good summer on the road and took a comfortable win as first under 16 girl despite still being in the under 14 category
More success for club riders in the under 9s with a win for Noah Lane and 4th for Max Kolbert. Charlotte and Jacob Crowley were 17th and 18th respectively.
The Under 12s Joshua lane was 5th and Isla Kolbert 6th overall and 1st girl, with Samuel Crowley 12th
As usual the veterans race saw the biggest entry with nearly 90 starters. In this big field gridding and a fast start is important and Paul Conneely had a flying first lap before dropping back a little but held on well for 22nd (7th vet 50). Simon Cocker rode a steady race for 45th (2nd vet 60) with Sean East not far behind in 50th (34th vet 40). Adam Kolbert after riding a few events last year is taking cross a bit more seriously this year and rode well for 68th overall while Dave Miller 74th (7th vet 60) lost a few places after hitting some tree roots and had a relatively soft landing in the bushes.
In the final senior and ladies race Fiona Kolbert completed the family outing for the day with a very creditable 5th place in the veteran ladies, which can only improve with some technical tweaks.
Next Sunday 13th October Witham Wheelers hold there round of the league, trying out a new venue at Stoke Rochford Hall, on a course which should provide some exciting and challenging riding. First race starts at 10.15. Thanks to Stoke Rochford Estates for providing the venue.
