19th April 2005 | 2nd league 10 mile Time Trial
An easterly wind for the second league 10–mile TT of the season
Once again as the riders gathered on Gorse Lane the weather was dry, although a fresh North Easterly wind made the evening cool and there was a threat of rain for later. Despite the chilly conditions there was a very good turn out with 23 riders signing on and a few extras simply out to give a little moral support. First away was Dan Nelstrop who was riding the course for the first time and managed a commendable 51.24. Judging by the mud on his clothes he had somehow managed to find plenty of muddy puddles and had spent some time checking out his suspension on the grass verge. I’m sure he will improve on this time in the coming weeks-especially if he tries to stay on the “Black stuff”. Following Dan up the road were the steadily growing numbers of junior riders with Ben and Simon Smith on the tandem and Jade and Michael Ostler. Unfortunately Jade gets a DNF this week as she punctured just after the turn. Michael continues his run of strong rides with a 29 dead — probably not an ideal ride this evening with the steady wind slowing times on the run home particularly for the lighter riders. The later riders rode more or less on form with small improvements over last week and a shock result in the Mendham family rivalry as Tony once more proves that age and experience can overcome youthful exuberance whipping Tom by 14 seconds!
