4 May 2004
Heavy black clouds loomed greeting us as we headed south up to Gorse Lane but turning into the Cricket Club we could see Grantham in the sun. But the black clouds were soon over us catching the later arrivals and sending the cricketers scurrying. Luckily it didn't last long nor was it particularly heavy and soon there was a complete rainbow over us but it did not bring a pot of gold to the riders as only one improved, Bill Harrison. The problem was it was a cold 12 degree celsius and the westerly wind made it even harder going out than usual.
Dave Strickson didn't ride this week, just watched, and so we had a new fastest club rider on the night; Bill Harrison with 25:48, an improvement of 8 secs on his best this year so far. Of the guests Mark Colclough (Sleaford Wheelers) was the fastest overall with 24:31, followed by Graeme Smallbone in 26:11, Peter Hopkins in 27:51 and Katie Colclough in 31:35.
We revised the Handicap Allowances this week as we discovered that we were using the 2000 times for some riders, a year now out of the last three seasons believe it or not, and it meant John Spendlow was the winner on handicap last week displacing Glenn Meredith, but Glenn finally got his win this week.
The points situation is now; Glenn leads with 34 points, followed by Tom and Tony Mendham with 30 and 27, Annie Arthur is fourth with 21, Bill Harrison 20, Dave Strickson 19, Dave Herd 18 and then a gap to Matt Penifold on 12, John Spendlow on 10, Rob Howbrook 9, John Burgess 5, Gordon Cakebread and Richard Edwards 3 each and Rob Johnson on 3.
In the season-long competition for the best veteran on standard, Dave Herd still leads with 3:27.
