20/11/10 Club Annual Dinner and prize presentation at the Angel and Royal Hotel. Photo Album»
The Witham Wheelers annual dinner was attended by some 60 members and guests. The new venue proved popular and following an enjoyable meal the main business of the evening took place as Richard Ellingworth of Club sponsors Echo prizewinnersPersonnel gave a resume of what has been a very successful year both for the club and for individual members. Richard then presented trophies to the individual award winners (list attached) with Simon Cocker taking the Club Person of the year award, which was voted for by members on the evening.
There was still time for one final presentation as Janet East, club Chairman gave Richard a lifetime membership of the club in honour of the contributions he has made to the club.
Peter Storey then thanked the club on behalf of the Kidney Research UK for the money raised during the year.
Following the traditional raffle there was then a chance to catch up with old friends and plan next years events as the evening came to a close. Top of Page»

30/10 - British University Hill Climb Championships
Two Witham Wheelers took part in the University champs held on Curbar edge in the Peak District. Jacob Storey riding for Sheffield was 43rd in 6.54 and Peter Barnes riding for Nottingham 97th in 7.50. The winner was Matthew Pilkington (Kings College) in 5.39

31/10 - National Hill Climb
Jim Coleman took part in the national championships held at Weston-Sub-Edge in the Cotswolds. Held on a climb of just over 1 mile length with an average gradient of 10% Dan Fleeman of Team Raleigh won for the second year in a row in 3mins 41 seconds. Jim came a very respectable 34th position in 4.25 to round of a successful first Hill Climb and is already looking forward to next year when the national champs will be held on a 4 mile climb, which will suit his style more. 10/10/10 - Hill Climb Championships
In the final event club event of the year a record 22 riders took to the line for the Hill Climb championship using the challenging Harby Hill.
Fastest rider on the day was Jim Coleman using his recent form from success in open events with a quick 2 minutes 39 seconds. However with Jim not being eligible for the club champs, overall second and club champion on the day was Paul Conneely in 3.13 by the narrow margin of 2 seconds from Peter Barnes.
In the juveniles category, Karl Baillie was the strongest in 3.33 from Carl Jennings which would have been good enough for 4th in the senior event.
As is traditional the Freewheel competition was held following the Hill climb going back down Harby Hill. In a tense battle a new name will appear on the coveted trophy as Robert Duckett Smith inched ahead of some heavyweight opposition including Phil Atherton and Bill Harrison
Left, club champion Paul Conneely.

3/10 - Viking challenge
The annual mountain bike ride took place starting from Redmile with mud guaranteed after the torrential rain of the previous days. Jim Coleman was first rider home again for the third year in a row.
Other club riders known to be taking part were Paul Conneely, Ian Clarke, Richard Ellingworth, Chris Carter and Ashley Money.

26/9 Yorkshire RC 2 stage Hill Climb
Jim Coleman took 4th place overall in the Yorkshire RC event held on two short sprint style climbs. There was only seconds between the top 4 places. The event was won by Jack kirk (team zappi).

2/10 Otley RC Stage HillClimb
Jim travelled up to Otley for another 2 stage event but not feeling too well retired after the first stage which consisted of a mile long climb with 20% starting gradient

peter pain26/9 Tour of Britain Challenge Ride
Peter Pain took part in this event at Stoke. The course took place over parts of the course used in the recent Tour of Britain. It was an undulating route that provided a real challenge to those taking part. Although the roads were not closed, slow at the junctions, the course was dominated by the 571 riders taking part in the challenge.
Peter managed to clock a time of 2hrs 50 minutes and 13 seconds and placed 14th overall; Dean Downing was a further 5mins behind but he was acting as a guide for guests with Rapha Condor!!

Thursday 30/9 Presentation evening at the Cricket Club on Gorse Lane. Doors open at 6.30pm, Watt bike challenge from 7.00pm (riders should wear club kit), presentations from around 8.30pm. Food will also be provided.
The evening is primarily to present awards for the Barkston Heath series of events held this year. Awards are being given to the best female and male rider in the U8, U10, U12, U14 & U16 categories. There will also be a trophy for the most improved rider and the coaches nomination. On top of that there will be medals for all those that have took part in 4 or more races throughout the season.
It would be great to see as many club members there as possible, young and old, hopefully there will be an opportunity for allcomers to have a go on the Watt bikes. Peter Pain has arranged for Steve Crosland to bring the Watt bikes along so the youngsters can have a competition on the night. Prizes being supplied by BCF. he have also invited Rob Sharman (East Midlands BC Talent Team coach) along.
I also hope to get some good publicity from this evening so can all youth riders wear club kit on the night.

19/9 - ABC Centreville Manchester Hill Climb
Jim Coleman took his first win of the hill climb season on the 2 mile climb of Blackstone Edge in the Pennines. Low cloud and driving rain made for challenging conditions but Jim took a clear win in 8min 22sec, some 45 secs clear of 2nd place Daniel Stevens (Liverpool Century RC)

12 Sept - Buxton CC hill climb
Jim Coleman continued his attack on the hill climb season with a 4.5 mile climb at Buxton. The event was won by Tejvan Pettinger (SRI Chinmoy cycling team) in an excellent time of 12mins.27secs beating Rob Hayles course record of 12.44. 2nd place went to James William Tucker (South Pennine RC) with 13.00. Jim managed to get 3rd in 13.17 having started cautiously over the the first couple of miles but he was pleased to still average over 20 mph for the climb.

5 Sept - Glossop Kinder Velo hill climb. Chris Carter and Jim Coleman ventured up to the Peak District on Sunday morning for their first attempt at the traditional autumn cycling passtime of hill climbing. For their first event they took on the infamous Snake Pass, 3.2 miles climbing from the start at Glossop with gradients ranging from 7 to 12% in to a block headwind against the clock. Both rode strongly with Chris recording a time of 21.39, while Jim turned in a superb 15.51, good enough for 2nd place, just 10 seconds behind course record holder and two times national hill climb champion James Dobbin 15.41, 3rd place went to Chris Myhill in 16.14.
Next week they take on a 4.5 mile climb at Buxton.

4/9 - Spalding Grass Track
A good turn out for the annual grass track races at Spalding Rugby Club with 2 club riders taking part.
Peter Barnes took part in the Senior events and rode tactically well in the longer distance events taking a good second place in the Unknown distance event and 5th place in both the 12 lap (3km) distance event and the concluding 32 lap (8km) scratch race.
Peter Cocker took part in the Juvenile Omnium consisting of 5 events in which he placed 400m scratch 4th, Devil take the Hindmost 2nd, 1 lap time trial 7th, 6 lap distance event 3rd and the Win and Out 3rd. These gave him 4th overall as a disappointing 1 lap time trial saw him drop from 2nd to finish just out of the prizes. Photos»

3 August Club BBQ and 10 mile Time Trial
Great turnout for the annual club BBQ with 37 riders signing on for the evening 10m despite dark clouds threatening. Unfortunately with the A607 remaining closed due to road works and despite the signs saying it would reopen at 7.00pm it was decided that the 10 could not take place.
Just to clarify, although there was little traffic at the start, reports coming back to the HQ was that there was heavy 2-way traffic on the section from the Denton junction to the far turn as drivers tried to find a way around the road closure. In view of this traffic the risk assessment was that the roads were too narrow to race on safely. Hopefully next week the road will be opened as scheduled.
To give Dave the masterchef a chance to get the food cooked, most of the riders went on a lap of the road race circuit with the usual suspects going for a burn up and the rest enjoying a pleasant evening ride.
With plenty of food and the bar open everybody seemed to enjoy the evening and a useful sum (TBC) was raised for the Kidney Research in memory of John Edwards.
Thanks to Dave for all his hard work in putting the food together and his helpers in the kitchen for making the evening such a success.

30/6 Gorse Lane 10 mile record
News that the recent announcement of Jim Coleman breaking the record for the Gorse Lane 10 mile course may have been premature. With Jeff Ellingworth having previously advised that this was held at 21.10 by Rod Ellingworth, however word now reaches us from the great man himself that it was in fact 21.02.
It seems that we are going to have to call in the Court of Arbitration in Sport to rule on this matter and in the meantime Jim will have to get a bigger chainring as obviously 65 tooth is not big enough. Or should he be made to ride on an old steel frame bike with a saddlebag and panniers on, as Rod would have been riding, in the good old days.

24/4 Welland Valley CC 10 Chris Carter and Jim Coleman rode the Welland Valley CC 10 on Saturday afternoon. With a strong head wind on the outward leg, times were not as quick as usual for the rapid A6 course. However Chris rode well and recorded a 23.33 with Jim taking third place behind James Perkins and Matt Sinclair with 21.16.

25/4/10 LVRC Road Race at Halifax Wheelers Phil Etches entered this LVRC 'E' category road race held at Brighouse and took along Chris Samler, Phil Atherton and Ross Tomblin for their first experience of LVRC.

The race consisted of 10 undulating laps over 46 miles and the first 6 laps saw very little of note in what was a reasonably comfortable pace. With 4 laps to go ex-professional Mick Holmes was allowed to drift off the front but was rarely more than 100 yards up the road. With the peloton looking as though it was ready to reel him in, the race became tangled up with the AB race and he was never seen again, securing a relatively easy victory.

The peleton settled down again and at the bell the hardworking Chris Samler, who had been prominent in keeping the pace competitive, kicked away with Phil Etches and a couple of other riders and never looked like being caught by the main bunch, although they were always in sight. In the sprint for 2nd place it was Phil and Chris who had the power left and they recorded 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Phil Atherton had sat in with the main bunch and he was able to outsprint them and record a creditable 6th place. Ross had sat comfortably at the back for the first 5 laps and retired as the peleton started thinning out.

18/4/10 Velo 99 Skillington
For the first time ever the Wobblies hosted Velo 99 on the Skillington road race course. Promoted by Tony Mendham and Phil Atherton there was a great turnout of marshals, helpers and cake makers, which, when combined with the spring sunshine, made for a fantastic day. The consensus from all riders was that the course was demanding and the hospitality and organisation superb. Thanks are due to everyone who made such an effort to contribute - it was hugely appreciated.

The organisational requirements meant the Wobblies were less well represented than normal in the race with just Ross Tomblin in a big Group 5 chased by Phil Etches and Chris Samler in a much smaller Group 6. Despite the lumps. bumps and the sharp turns of the Skillington course the pace was furious and it took until half way round the last lap for Group 6 to catch with Group 5. Within another mile this large leading bunch, which included Ross, Phil and Chris caught with the leader.

Entering Skillington there were several kicks that quickly split the group, although Chris and Phil both just managed to hold on. Coming down the long incline with only the final steep hill and the sprint finish it was all to play for with the leading bunch of five some twenty metres ahead of the rest . With one last effort Phil held on to Rob Blackburn's wheel up the hill but was pipped in the sprint to come 2nd in the race while Chris finished 4th. Ross managed a 10th place overall and fourth in his group.

Altogether some great racing, efficient organisation and friendly hospitality from the Witham Wheelers.

17/4 VTTA Notts and East Mids 10 mile TT
On the A1 based course at Tuxford it was not the fastest afternoon due to the wind, but club riders still produced some rapid times. Pride of place to Chris Carter recording a personal best 22.44 and Bill Harrison 23.57, Dave Herd 25.40 and Mike Lewis 26.29 Also riding for the wheelers were Bill Harrison Mike Lewis and Dave Herd but not sure on their times. Jim Coleman was relegated to 2nd overall in 20.22 just 6 seconds behind last years winner James Perkins. of Zenith CC

Some of you may not be aware that two top one day British Road Races take place soon on our doorstep, details as follows:
• East Midlands Cicle Classic - 25th April
Starts at Oakham, finishes at Melton. Go to somewhere like Owston to see the action. Britain's own version of the Paris Roubaix. www.cicleclassic.co.uk/
• Lincoln Grand Prix - 9th May
As it says, based in Lincoln, go and watch them tackle the 'Steep' cobbled climb up to the castle, great atmosphere, tough racing. www.lincolngrandprix.org.uk/

11/4 Lincs RRA 10 mile Time Trial Championship
On a circuit course near Saxilby a strong wind slowed riders significantly on the finish leg, but Jim Coleman took another win in 22.15,. Quickest club rider on the day was Martin Hedley in 27.05, followed by Peter Cocker 27.06, Dave Herd 27.25 and Simon Cocker 28.02

11/4 Road Race - Blyth, South Yorkshire
Three wobblies took part in the latest TLI Road Race at Blyth South Yorkshire and, with riders from as far afield as Sweden and South Africa, the race had an international feel about it.

The handicap race was split into three groups with Phil Atherton and Ross Tomblin in group 1 and Phil Etches in group 2 with a 4 minute handicap and group 3 a further 3 minutes behind. Phil A and Ross worked well and did their fair share helping group 1 close an early 3 rider break down by the end of the third lap out of 7 and the group settled down before being caught by group 2 with 2 laps to go. Phil Etches featured prominently as the pace picked up and was well positioned as the big bunch swung sharply left with 800 yards to go. Group 3 were only just catching at this point and few of the top riders were able to pick their way through the bunch as the long sprint for home kicked off. Phil Etches managed to pick the right wheels up the slight rise and save just enough for the final lunge and nab himself an impressive 2nd place overall and 1st in his age group. Phil A and Ross both came over the line with the main bunch which was their main aim for the day.

For the statisticians group 1 covered the 32.5 miles in an average 23.5mph, group 2 managed an average 24.7mph and group 3 came home in an average 25.7mph. Incidentally, Fabian Cancellara only managed an average 24.5mph in todays Paris - Roubaix. I don't know what that says about todays TLI race but I think we can safely surmise that he would not start favourite if he entered next years event!

10/4 RTTC-Rudy Project 25 mile Time Trial
Bill Harrison and Mike Lewis made the long trip down to Winchester for round 2 of the national Rudy project series. It was a glorious day with moderate NNE winds which gave a nice headwind on the home leg but nevertheless an almost perfect race day. In the Vets category the winner achieved a very commendable 56:13, whilst Mike did a 1:24:12 and I managed 1:09:43.

3 April Sleaford Charity 10m TT
Early report from this event last Saturday: full club results to follow when available.
Lots of Wobblies riding the Sleaford 10 on Saturday and with a dry yet headwind the first leg to Osbournby roundabout seemed a good day for all. Close results for the top club rider with Chris Carter just edging out Dave Strickson by just 2 secs with 24.12.
Second Claim member Jim Coleman took the overall win with a rapid 21.32 from last years winner Patrick Owen in second and Matt Sinclair from Leicester cc in third.
Times: Jim Coleman 1st in 21.32, Chris Carter 24.12, Dave Strickson 24.14, Bill Harriosn 25.45, Dave Herd, 26.45, Toby Kiely 27.09, Peter Pain 27.28, Martin Hedley 27.30, Kim Paxton 28.26, Chris Crawford 29.45, Karen Crawford 37.37

4 April Velo 99 at Car Colston

The Velo 99 2010 season resumed with the first race this year at Car Colston and all Wobblies rode well and had some great results. Group 6 failed to overcome a large handicap and fought it out amongst themselves for minor placings but a bit of teamwork between Phil Etches and Chris Samler allowed the latter to slip away on the final lap and time trial home for first place in the group with Phil letting the others do the chasing before outsprinting them for 2nd place in the group.

Group 5 were the largest group of the day and contained Phil Atherton, Ross Tomblin and Dave Herd and they steadily worked their way through the groups and only failed to catch one lone rider from group 3 who managed to stay away. They picked up Tony Mendham from group 4 on the way and some concerted efforts from Steve King managed to shred most of group 5 and all but Tony from group 4 by the start of the last lap.

The last lap saw some playing about before the pace picked up with 2 miles to go as riders sought to position themselves for the wind assisted sprint. Phil Atherton managed to kick away from the bunch and take 2nd place overall and win his group. Tony Mendham did a great job in the sprint to get 4th place on the day and comfortably win his group. Ross Tomblin and Dave Herd were both in the bunch sprint for the line and both managed top 10 places to round off a great day for the Wobblies, probably the first time that any single club has provided the winners for groups 4, 5 and 6.

April New circuit races coming up at Thoresby Hall near Ollerton. Both Riders and Volunteers to help are wanted. For anyone wanting to try some road racing this would be an ideal opportunity to have a go, whatever your age group. Also a chance to put something back into the sport if you can help out on the day.
I am sure some of the club riders will be going over to have a go, so let me know if you want some more information and want to get involved. Simon Download details»

28/3 West Leake Triathlon
Report from new member Mick Oliver who took part in one of the first Triathlon's of the season in Britain.
A pool based event and for those off early it was frost biting stuff as they came out of the pool and hit the wind chill. Most wore tights and tops but those that didn't would have paid for it. I didn't go off till midday so braved the conditions with Tri suit only and was OK - thankfully.
Had a steady strong swim (400m) then a good bike with an average around 23.5mph on a midly undulating but windy course. At one point I thought the wind was using me as a kite at one point. I based my bike on heart rate monitor so as not to blow up on the run with it being the first tri of the year - so felt I had something in reserve. But I didn't have anything in reserve. Or not much! The run was hard and I'm not looking forward to seeing the run spilt.
Anyway the the swim and bike must have been enough. Not bad for a very early season outing to come in 1st Vet 40-49 and 11th overall with an entry of 350 - probably less than 300 on the day

28/3 Spalding Hilly 25 Mile Time Trial
A tough course starting from Bourne Woods to Corby Glen then on to the turn at Somerby roundabout was made harder by a strong head wind on the outward leg.
Fastest on the day was Joel Wainman in 58.00 minutes with Jim Coleman not far behind in second place with 59.36. Club riders Chris Carter 1.07.11, Dave Strickson 1.09.10, Neil Sentance 1.10.07, Bill Harrison 1.12.36, Kim Paxton 1.19.55, Mike Lewis DNF. With Chris Carter take a group winners prize.

27/3 National Youth Circuit Series Yarborough sports centre, Lincoln
The top young riders from around the country part in the first round of the national Youth series.
In the 16 and under age category held over 35km, with a field of 60 riders Peter Cocker in his first race at this level did well to stay with the main bunch until nearly half distance before dropping back to finish just over a lap behind the winner Jonathan Dibbens in around 35th position.

6th March Scunthorpe RC 10m Time Trial
Chris Carter, Bill Harrison and Jim Coleman were all on the A15 at Scunthorpe on Saturday afternoon doing their first 10 mile Time Trial of the season. Chris rode a personal best of 25.25 which gave him 2nd Handicap. Bill's time was 26mins and Jim managed to get the win in 21.45 nearly 30 secs ahead of Cherry Valley team mate Ian Dalton.

6th March Darley Moor 35m Road Race
First road race of the year by club riders at Darley Moor near Ashbourne. In the 35 mile 3/4 Category event a big field of 80 plus riders tackled 22 laps of the closed circuit. Peter Barnes started a bit too slowly and was dropped early on but rode on strongly to finish just over a lap down. Simon Cocker stayed in the bunch until 9 laps too go when the early season lack of miles finally told and he dropped back to retire gracefully with 3 laps to go, to watch the sprint finish.
Peter Cocker rode the Youth Under 16 event taking 9th place after his lone attack with a lap and half to go was reeled in before the final bunch sprint, won by Ben Green from Lincoln.
Their is another series of races this Saturday if anyone wants an early season workout. Top of Page»

2nd May Spalding Criteriums
Spalding CC are running town centre races in conjunction with the Flower festival. The races will be run on a 1km circuit around the town centre. The circuit will be barriered, all the roads are closed for 5 hours. Each race will have primes and run on a similar format to The Tour Series. We have music and a DJ, live commentary. HQ will be at Everyboy's Gym off Vine Street. Should be a good afternoon of racing. We even have a grandstand at the finish.
Please tell everyone including all the youths to get their entries in now as it's starting to fill up.
Events for all categories and age groups, entry details on the British (BC) web site. You need to be a BC licence holder enter but you have time to do this once you have got your entry in.
Good chance for the young riders to have a go at road racing, let me know if you need any help with how to enter etc.

20/2/10 Coalville Wheelers 25 (Griffydam)
Jim Coleman and Chris Carter struck some unseasonably good weather on Saturday afternoon for another Sporting 25 mile course. With Jim breaking the hour in 59.25 to take 5th place behind winner Matt Bottrills 55.28. Chris produced a good 1.09.23 and can only get quicker as the year progresses.
The snow which caused the club reliability to be cancelled also stopped the Dynamic Duo riding the team Swift 10 on the ultra fast course at North Cave on Sunday morning. This means the new carbon 65T ring still awaits its first outing, makes me feel weak just thinking about it. Simon

lrra presentations13/2/10 LRRA Dinner & Presentation
The LRRA dinner took place at Sleaford and all the Silver was given out for the 2009 Lincolnshire Time Trial championships.

No club representation on the night but Neil Sentence won the 2Up - 1st Mixed Team at 43.22 and Kim Paxton won 1st Mixed Team (with Neil at 43.22) 1st Handicap on 25TT at 40.25 and 50M TT 1st Lady and she won the Christine Wilson Rose Bowl. Unfortunately they were not able attend to collect their awards.
As you can see there are plenty of pots up for grabs and with several more club riders threatening to ride open Time Trials this year maybe we will see some more club success.
Thanks to Steve Foreman (Lincs Race Photos) for the picture. Top of Page»

29th Nov Scunthorpe Road Club
The surrounding grass banks of the Quibell park cycle track and wooded hill side turned into a real mud fest after a torrential downpour during the U12s race, leaving all riders struggling to keep up right, some more successfully than others.
U16’s - Ben Green won again, despite a heavy fall in the woods with Peter Cocker in 7th
U12’s - Eleanor Crawford struggled in the heavy conditions but battled on gamely for 13th place.
Seniors -  Chris Crawford was the only club survivor in the senior event picking his way round gingerly in 56th place. 7/1/10 Sue Bunn
It is with sadness that we report that Sue, wife of member Steve Bunn died recently after a short illness.
There is going to be a celebration of her life - sombre clothing not required at Grantham Crematorium Harrowby Road, Grantham 2.00 PM Monday 11th of January.
If people want to buy flowers they are kindly requested to send them to someone they love... etc etc..
Our thoughts are with Bunny and his family at this time.

12/1/10 Social Evening - SIS Nutrition Talk 7.30pm at the Cricket club on Gorse Lane Grantham NG32 1AP
we will have Michael Fish from Science in Sport giving a talk on nutrition as applicable to competitive Cycling and Triathlon. This should last around an hour or so with a chance to ask questions with samples available and possibly some special offers.
So an ideal chance for all members to expand their knowledge of an area which from a personal point view I know I do not give sufficient thought.
ps The bar will be open, but only for the sale of nutritious alcohol.

Saturday 24th April 2010 The Discover Rutland CiCLE Tour.
Entries for 2010 are now open at www.sientries.co.uk

THIS EVENT NOW INCLUDES CHIP TIMING. The Routes remain the same as last year and the links for these are below. These are for guidance and are subject to possible change nearer to the event, so just treat them as a guide.

Maps: 100 miles www.mapmyride.com, 50 miles www.mapmyride.com

The Rutland Tour has two distances, 100 miles, 50 miles. This event is run in conjunction with the International CiCLE Classic race the following day. This is the biggest one-day race in the UK, so why not stay over after riding the cyclo-sportive and enjoy the racing the following morning. The sportive does not take place on the same roads as the race, as the race covers many tracks not accessible outside of the race. All of the roads are suitable for road bikes with slick tyres.

The 100 mile challenge covers terrain typical of Rutland and East Leicestershire; steep, short climbs that come thick and fast on quiet lanes through picturesque villages. The course is deliberately designed to get harder as it progresses, so don't be fooled by the relatively easy start out of Oakham.

There will be two (I'm working on 3) manned feedstations on the route and mechanical support provided by Neil Exton of All-Geared-Up. Both Neil and Rutland Cycling will be acting as sag wagons. There will also be tea and coffee available at Owston Village Hall (Feedstation 2) alongside the normal sports drink and food. As a local college is hosting the event there will be an opportunity to shower and change after the event.
