GA Bennett & GT Ellingworth RR – 27th May 2019 – Supported by Pedalpushers – Report & Results

Witham Wheelers promoted their annual two British Cycling Road Races on Bank Holiday Monday in generally dry conditions but a strong westerly breeze made for some hard but entertaining racing, with some great results for local riders.

In the morning 48 mile race for 3/4 category riders Karl Baillie (Witham Whs) made his intentions clear leading through at the end of lap one with a 30 second lead. Over the second lap Karl was caught by the bunch before breaking away again with 3 other riders Owyn Wallace, Thomas Key (Leicester Forest CC) and Phillip Maddocks (Leicestershire RC) to have a 30 second lap at the end of the second lap. Over the penultimate lap they were joined by another 9 riders and the lead pushed out to 1min 30 secs going into the final lap. Still together up the final climb with 1 km to go. Karl lead out the finishing sprint and was strong enough to take a convincing win from Jack Levick (Rose Race team). A frustrated Martyn Ludlam (Witham Whs) lead in the main bunch over 2 minutes down in 16th place having missed the earlier break, while Harry Browning was 24th.

The afternoon 82 mile race for Elite/1/2 category riders had a strong field including 2 of the top 3 riders in the national Elite rankings. At the end of the first lap Kieran Savage (Cycling Sheffield) and Simon Wilson (Ribble Pro Cycling) held a 15 sec lead over a hard chasing bunch. It was all together again until lap 3 when 6 riders including ex-wheeler Peter Cocker (Richardsons Trek) held a 22 sec’ lead over the bunch. A lap later the same 6 now had a 25 sec’ lead over 7 riders with the bunch a further 16 sec’s back.

Into the penultimate Lap 6 and Alex Luhrs (Ribble Pro Cycling) was 30 sec’s ahead of 15 riders with 9 riders at 5 seconds and the bunch at another 30 sec’s. With a lap to go Peter was still looking strong in what was now a leading group of 11 riders, which had a 34 second lead over 14 riders with the remnants of the bunch dropping further back out of contention.

Despite a cagey final lap the 11 riders climbed the hill all together, still with a 15 second lead over the nearest chasers. Into the finishing straight it was Alex Luhrs who proved the strongest holding off Oakham rider Ollie Maxwell (St Piran) with Peter just behind in an excellent 5th place which moved him up to 13th place in the National 1st category rankings. Steve Young was 28th (RAF CC) while Reece and Adam Egner were forced to retire earlier in the race as only 41 of the 58 starters finished the race which averaged 26.6mph.

Just thought I’d publish this received from one of the riders.

Afternoon Simon, Looked out for you after the first race today but couldn’t find you. Just like to say , that was a brilliant event you put on today!! Was great to race on those roads and villages and feel really safe. The standard of riding seemed good in the bunch.

Many thanks to all those who helped to make this possible, the Club Volunteers, Accredited Marshalls, Commissaires, NEG riders and First Aiders.

Witham Wheelers promote their annual British Cycling Road Races on Bank Holiday Monday 28th May. As usual there are two races held over the rolling 12 mile circuit,  and with the main hill just over a km before the finish line it always seems to produce a good race. The afternoon event is on of the few National B events held in the East Midlands during the year and always gets a good quality field.

Many thanks again to Pedal Pushers of Grantham, the Ultimate Racing Bike Shop for their support of this event.

GT Ellingworth in the morning for 3/4 category riders over 3.3/4 laps.

GA Bennet in the afternoon for E/1/2/3 category riders over 6.3/4 laps

As usual we will be utilising the to provide National Escort Group and Accredited marshalls to provide safety for riders and the general public.
