Sunday 13th September – Witham Whs 100 mile challenge ride – Updated

Well the weather gods certainly smiled on us as 29 riders ‘enjoyed’ the delights of a 100 mile lumpy route. Heading out into the Vale of Belvoir before turning south through Rutland past Launde Abbey and into the Welland valley to pass under the Harringworth viaduct. The return to Grantham past Rutland Reservoir at Empingham before heading to Grimsthorpe Castle and onto Ropsley.

It was an 8.00 start from the Meres setting out in groups of 6 to meet Covid distancing requirements. With quite a wide variety of abilities the first group arrived back at around 2.00 averaging 20.2mph moving time for the route. Several groups rolled back over the next hour at around the 17mph mark, with the last riders making at back 5.45.

Great to say that everyone made it round, although the rolling (hilly?) nature of the route coupled with the distance and the afternoon heat did make it a real challenge.

Thanks to Alan and Janet for providing support on route and the photos and Gill for the Flapjack, just what was needed.

Pleased to say theres been a good response from people intending to ride on Sunday.

The idea is just to have an enjoyable ride, and hit that 100 mile mark over an enjoyable route, its not a race.!!

A few notes:

Start Time, meet at the Meres from 7.45am with the first group to start around 8.00. Remember we need to ride in groups of maximum 6 riders starting at around 1 minute intervals. In light of the recent change in Covid regulations we should try to stay in groups of 6, Britsh Cycling insurance only covers riders keepng to this guidance.

Please leave your name and a contact number before starting, so that we have a record to check that everyone is back safe and sound and for any possible Covid tracing requirements.

The Route: I have attached a copy of the route map and here is the link to the Strava file where you can download the GPX file for your Garmin. It is a ‘lumpy’ route so be prepared.

Refreshments: Alan and Janet will be able to take some food for you if required, for a stop at around the 55 mile mark at the Spokes Cafe (has good reviews). This is in the village of Harringworth, I think you need to go slightly off route to find it, before retracing to take the turn under the Viaduct. You cannot miss the Viaduct its a very large brick structure!!

Spares: Please ensure you are carrying necessary spare tubes and tools etc. to get you home, with Covid restrictions we should minimise the sharing of tools etc.

Covid: Apologies for mentioning it again but it is a current fact of life, please respect social distancing rules and wear a mask where necessary.

Fingers crossed for the weather and hope to see you Sunday.

Any questions, let me know

As you may know Sportives can restart from 5th September under certain restrictions. As our early season Reliability Rides were so rudely interrupted by the virus, its time to test out the Lockdown Fitness with our very own Witham Whs 100 mile challenge ride. Remember Its not a race, just the chance for an enjoyable ride on some different roads.

Start Location:   Meres Leisure centre, where there is ample car parking and you can avoid any issues with traffic lights getting out of town.

Start Time: First Group leaves at 8.00am, Covid Regulations means that we will have to set off in groups of 6 at 45 second intervals. So just sign-on and sort out who you want to ride with.

Route:   Based on the original Echo 100 which was actually around 97 miles and hasn’t been run as a Reliability for a good few years. Its been modified to 101.6 miles and includes 6291 ft climbing. A lumpy route, some might say hilly but it goes into some lovely countryside down in the Welland Valley

Refreshments: We will hopefully have a back-up vehicle so bring some food along and we will arrange a suitable stop around half-way. There is also a cyclists café on the route at around 65 miles Spokes at Gretton, plus numerous pubs along the route.

Cost: Nothing, just sweat and tears, so its great value!

Any questions or suggestions please contact me.

If you could let me know if you are interested that would be great, hope to see you then.

Hopefully if this works well we can get back to organising some Official Club Runs!!
