Barkston Heath 2009

The 2009 series of 9 training and racing events at Barkston Heath concluded with a very sucessful season for the Under 16s with Witham Wheelers riders doing very well.
In the U12 Caitlan Conneely took a clear win with 62 points from Rob McAndrew of Spalding 32 pts and Kerrigan Robb (Witham Whs) on 20 pts.
The U16s was also decided before the last event and although George Thompson of Sleaford won he could still not overhaul Peter Cocker of Witham Wheelers who was absent on holiday. Final overall positions: Peter 142 pts from George 137 pts (Sleaford Whs) and Toby Kiely (Witham Whs) 3rd on 133pts.

The juniors should be congratulated on their enthusiasm in turning out every week whatever the weather and the various club coaches for making it possible. Plans are already in hand for next year with some changes to the format. With the current increase in Junior members we can look forward to some good competition.

Wednesday 27th May Barkston Heath, with full facilities available again, so senior event staring around 7.30.
Don't forget if you have any children bring them along, all ages catered for from 3 years upwards, see attached link for photographs of events so far.

Please come along and support this facility, the more riders we have the better the events will be and the more chance you will have of riding with others of a similar ability.

Yes its that time of year again and the first session is next Wednesday 29th April.
For those of you not familiar this is a closed road circuit at RAF Barkston Heath accessible through the main entrance (1 mile from Ancaster) note photo ID required at gate (don't forget). The circuit is approx 1 km long, well surfaced and very suitable for bike racing and training.

Cyclesport - Trek
Peter has organised for Trek bikes to be at the circuit with examples of their current range for riders to have a look at and a try out.

Juniors
Peter Pain has the Coaching of the youngsters well in hand in conjunction with the British Cycling Go-Ride scheme, so it would be great to see as many youngsters, 8 years old and upwards, as possible no matter what type of bike they have or their experience. Start time 6.00.
These will run every fortnight as listed on the club event list.
A flyer is attached, please print out and post at suitable locations.

Seniors
Its proposed to have a handicap race in the usual format to kick the season off, please sign on by 7.00.

However last year a lot of people (44) tried the races at least once but the numbers dropped of markedly as the summer went on. As we have the option of the facility, it would seem a pity if we cannot cater for local senior riders as well. The obvious benefits are
1) Its low cost to enter and you do not need a licence, just full membership of either Witham Wheelers or Sleaford Wheelers. Riders from other clubs can ride as guests with second claim membershipof either club.
2) It is a safe circuit even in the wet and traffic free.

From comments received last year possible issues are as follows, with possible solutions.
1) Handicaps not good enough - Solution the only way of overcoming this if we cannot access a bigger circuit (we are trying) is by giving some groups 1 and maybe even 2 laps start. Or have separate races for different standards of riders.
2) Bored with same format each week. - Solution look at different events, some ideas as suggested by Phil Etches i.e. Time Trials, Team Pursuits, Devils, Individual Pursuits, Olympic Sprints
3) Weather not very good - Solution not much we can do about that, the Juniors turn out every week therefore the seniors should also be able to if sufficiently motivated.
4) Too many events, alternating with Linces League - Solution reduce to say once a month

It would be good if everyone who is interetested in this facility could turn up the first week so that we can gauge interest and help agree what the format will be for the rest of the season.

Any ideas or suggestions please email Simon
